Anti*Colonial Fantasies / Decolonial Strategies

Anti*Colonial Fantasies / Decolonial Strategies involved artists from different diasporas, students and lecturers of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, who occupy themselves with a critique of the consequences of colonialism –with a focus on Academia– and the imagination of alternative realities.
The project included an art exhibition as well as performances, workshops and talks by decolonial practitioners, as well as a publication.

The start of the project was an open call for artistic positions that dealt with Gloria Anzaldua’s notion of auto history as methodology. We sought to address and open questions in regards to: the sequels of colonialism in Austria and how it continues to shape our subjectivities by inhabiting an intersection of oppressed identities, the fragmentation that coming from histories of migrations means and how this impacts our lives on a daily basis; the occupation of specific positions at the borders, as people of color, dealing with structural oppression; othering and exoticisation, enlightenment reason as complicit with the Eurocentric bourgeois projects, and its accommodation to white supremacy and scientific racism; the role of the educative institution in the colonial project and the continuity of this role nowadays, how this translates in the curricula and what is considered as valuable knowledge; a discussion that starts at the body, reclaiming other spiritual dimensions, emotions, and rituals.
